Radiator Parts and Functions

Within the radiator itself, it has 3 main parts, known as the outlet and inlet tanks, the core, and the pressure cap. Each of these 3 parts plays its own role within the radiator.

The main role of a radiator hose is to connect the engine to the radiator and allow the coolant to run through the respective tank.

Why Is My Car Radiator Leaking

The most common reasons for a leak can be a hole in the radiator caused by rust, a manufacturing defect, or cracks developing from the engine getting too hot.

Regardless of what caused your radiator to leak, it’s never wise to drive your car after it overheats.

Why Your Radiator Is Leaking

The leading and most common cause is corrosion in the radiator. Radiators, hoses, and hose connections collect sediment and rust that can punch holes in the radiator over time.

In a few instances, weak coolant can be the cause of overheating.

Can I Drive My Car with a Radiator Leak

Depending on the cause of the leakage, you may get away with driving with a radiator leak for a short time.

Eventually, the lack of coolant will cause your car to overheat which may in turn precipitate damage to various engine bay components.

That’s why it’s a good idea to stop and inspect the issue as soon as you notice it.

How Far Can You Drive with a Radiator Leak

Four or five minutes of full-throttle operation with little or no coolant is virtually guaranteed to destroy an engine.

Ten minutes or more of normal driving with very low or no coolant will likely result in major engine problems.
